Beer and Bagel Run 2011

Turan and I had a great time running the Beer and Bagel again at Quarry Oaks.

It was a very nice day again for the event. They changed the course quite a bit so it was like running a whole new event.

Instead of starting at the clubhouse, we started at the parking lot down lower and then went up the hill like we were leaving and then looped around and back into the course. We crossed the same creek as last year but I was able to leap it. Some of the hills were 'very hilly'! :-)

Then came the challenging creek. The water was probably a foot deep and you couldn't jump over this one so you had to make your way through it. I used the high knee theory. Then you went up the hill and came back down and went through it again. I powered my way through.

We then finished by going up a gradual hill back to the parking lot and by that time our calves were burning, our brains were mush and our feet were soaking wet. And yes it was a great time!

And this year there were plenty of bagels and beer!

Papillion Duathlon

It was a lot of fun. It was a beautiful morning to do it maybe a little warm. I woke up at 4:15 and couldn't get back to sleep. Probably a combo of excited and not sure what to expect having never done a duathlon before. Ended up getting to the recreation area around 7 so plenty of time before the 8 a.m. start. Got my bike placed into the transition zone and then it was time to run. My goal was 1 hour and 23 minutes. The first run was 2 miles and was an out and back. It was around a lake so it was nice. I wanted to find a nice even pace so I had something left for the final 2 run. The run wasn't hilly and that helped a lot. I ran at an 8 minute pace so that was nice. Then came the biking. I've tried to bike more but I'm more of a casual biker with my mountain bike. I knew it would be a challenge. I didn't quite expect the hills and the switchbacks. That made for a challenging start. We looped around to opposite direction of the run and past Papillion LaVista South High School. Then onto highway 370. The first part was downhill but then it was a nasty climb uphill. I nearly came to a stop a couple of times struggling. Then we moved onto another highway and it was a good combo of up and down hills. Then we made it back to the main bike area for another lap of the same. I knew what to expect this time and I know I went faster but was one of the slower ones out there. I was right on my goal time with the run left though so I just kept a nice even pace. I ran it more at the 10 just so I would have something left at the very end. And I did -- finishing just under my goal.

Havelock 3K

It was a great morning to run. I felt really fast all week and I was ready to go! I started off near the front of the pack, usually I don't do that, but I felt really confident! I was passed by a few people but not very many but there was no one mile marker so I wasn't sure of my pace. I finally looked down when I figured I was over half way done and the watch said 8:02 (I think I need a Garmin). I went up the hill on Fremont and then into the final turn and felt great. I was able to run pretty hard down the finish line and was right where I wanted to be! My goal was to be in the top 100 and I finished in 85th!

Leprechaun Chase 10K

My first 10K of 2011 took place at the Strategic Air and Space Museum between Lincoln and Omaha. It started inside the hangar which was cool because you were able to stay warm before the race. When you exited you ran around a big plane and then around the front side of the museum. Then it was off to some grass and hills behind it before hooking up with the trails in Mahoney State Park. I did fairly well until the 4 to 5 mile mark and then started slowing down. I ran a 8:43 first mile and though for sure I would break my goal of 59:19. I was within a minute though so I was glad for that but I was hoping to never run over a hour in a 10K again!
